During the 1960’s, Mr. J. Walter Cameron had an idea that was full of hope. He saw a great need for office space to house community agencies that provided services to the special people of Maui County. It was a time when many agencies occupied facilities with leaking roofs and broken windows. His idea was to develop a series of buildings in which each of the agencies could be independent yet interconnected by open space--island-style. The Federal and State governments were willing to contribute to the idea if the Maui community would demonstrate its support. The generous people of Maui sent donations to Mr. Cameron for three years prior to ground-breaking. The community support enabled Mr. Cameron to receive the government grants and the J. Walter Cameron Center opened its doors in 1973. Now, many years later, the J. Walter Cameron Center is still the place where Maui’s families can reach 18 resident agencies all in one location. They come to seek services, to volunteer and/or simply to learn about the many programs and services offered to the community. Plus, every year more than 200 community organizations use the meeting facilities at subsidized rates. In many communities a place like this is still a dream. But for Maui the dream came true in the J. Walter Cameron Center, a place, still full of hope that shows how much Maui cares. We thank you for your continued support of our Annual Fund Drive. Your gifts help to maintain our facilities so our agencies can continue to provide hope for the special people of Maui.
