The American Heart Association (AHA) is the leading authority in cardiovascular heart disease in Hawaii and a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."
The AHA’s impact goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010. Progress toward the goal will be measured according to these indicators:
· Reduce the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke by 25 percent.
· Reduce the prevalence of smoking, high blood cholesterol and physical inactivity by 25 percent.
· Reduce the rate of uncontrolled high blood pressure by 25 percent.
· Eliminate the growth of obesity and diabetes.
We are happy to announce that in 2008 the AHA nearly accomplished this goal two years ahead of schedule! Coronary Heart Disease death rate reduced by 25.8% and the Stroke death rate by 24.5%; almost there! However, as great as it was to achieve our Impact Goal of 2010 areas in risk factors increased; Diabetes, Obesity, High Blood Pressure, etc. The AHA still has lots to do and with your help and support we will overcome Hawaii’s #1 and #3 killers – Heart Disease and Stroke.
The American Heart Association offers a variety of educational programs that target people in the worksite, schools, healthcare organizations and the community. High quality cardiovascular research is the cornerstone of the American Heart Association. The AHA also provides educational literature, free blood pressure & stroke screenings, information and training in CPR and modules to use as learning tools.
